MH-47E Chinook - Revell 03876 - 1:72

This model kit was a very pleasant surprise! The kit contain two build options:

  • MH-47E Chinook, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment “Night Stalkers”, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, USA, 1998
  • Chinook HC Mk3, Royal Air Force, 2004

You must decide which one to build before you start as there are many optional steps and also some cutting and drilling required depending on which version you choose.

The instruction is a 24 page color booklet with 72 detailed steps – very impressive!

One minor drawback is that this kit is based on tools from 1995 and as such not all parts fit perfectly together so some plastic putty is required!

You have to do cut off the fuel tanks from the fuselage if you decide to build the MH-47E version as the main fuselage is for the HC Mk3 variant. You must be very careful when cutting to avoid problems with fitting the larger fuel tanks for the MH-47E and avoid too much plastic putty! I would have preferred that the main fuselage was “neutral” i.e. without the HC Mk3 fuel tanks molded on.

Pros

  • The kit contains not only two different color schemes but actually two different Chinook versions!
  • Many optional steps
  • Very good instructions – the colors help make it easy to understand each step.
  • Cargo ramp can be opened and closed, which allow you to look inside.
  • Many details for a 1:72 model

Cons

  • Some plastic putty required, especially around the fuel tanks on MH-47E version.
  • Some major cutting required – not recommended for beginners!

Conclusion

I build the MH-47E “Night Stalkers” variant and I love the look of it! More details that usually expected on a 1:72 model in this price range and very good color instructions results in a rating slightly above average.
